Hi, 

I am an appreciator and an encourager, so I love telling people what I find special about them.  As a bonus, when people know that I like them, and that I’m on their side, they tend to like me in return!

Today’s article is about making other people feel special.  When you make someone else feel special, your know-like-trust factor with them goes through the roof!   We are each convinced that there’s something special and amazing about us (as indeed is true).  When someone else shows us that they share that belief in our special-ness, it simply confirms that they have excellent judgment!

We live in a world that tends to treat people like they’re identical, whether it’s in school, on the job, or in the family we grew up in. 

I KNOW that you are special and I know that your work will be infinitely more successful and easier when you let other people know that they are special.  This starts from inside you.  When you get in touch with the many ways in which you are unique, and just how very much you have to offer the world, then you’ll find it easier to extend this out to other people.

Get MORE of What You Want by Making Others Feel Special!

Does this sound familiar?  While you place your order at Starbucks, you’re simultaneously on the phone AND trying to find money in your wallet, so you don’t make eye contact with the barrista or say “thank you.”  You want to save time with a prospect, so you send off a quick email instead of picking up the phone.   You don’t want to spend unnecessary time or interrupt someone, so you text them instead of emailing them and you don’t even consider calling them. 

Think about it:  When was the last time someone made you feel special?  Outside of your family, who makes you feel special? 

When someone DOES fully pay attention to you and make you feel special, what impact does that have on you?

I love shopping at stores with well-trained staff who ask questions about what I like and aim to help me find just the right book, make-up or gift.  I am much more likely to spend money in those shops than I am in a discount place where the only staff are cashiers.

Are your experiences similar?  When you feel special, are you more likely to buy something?  Are you more likely to return to that shop and maybe even to that same salesperson? 

If you want to stand out from the many other people in your field, if you want to have long-term relationships with loyal customers, if you want more referrals … then you want to practice making other people feel special.




CALL TO ACTION

How do you make other people feel special?

Give yourself permission to feel special.  Any fundamental change starts from within YOU before it goes out into the world.  The more you allow yourself to feel special and the more you give yourself what you want, the easier you’ll find it to make others feel special.  When you have a specialness deficit in your relationship with you, it’s hard to have the energy to extend this consistently to others. 

Pay attention!
  • Ask people questions about what they enjoy, about what they want to experience, about what their values are.
  • Affirm their response.
  • Give people your full attention.  Do not take calls, read, or mentally check out while you’re with them!
Surprise people!  We all love to get surprises and it seldom happens.  A dear friend leaves a card and sweet treats on my doorstep every Valentine’s Day and I’m always surprised and thrilled! 

Make phone calls to personally invite warm prospects or past clients to accept your offer.  Explain that you’ve been thinking about them and explain WHY you think this offer is a great fit for them.  Paint the bigger picture with them in it!

Share your gratitude with customers, team members, colleagues, friends and family.  Send hand-written notes.  See http://www.365thankyounotes.com/ which has catalyzed one of my colleagues to write a gratitude note daily for 365 days in a row!  Tell people how much you value them, instead of keeping that thought inside your head.  “Everyone wants to be appreciated, so if you appreciate someone, don't keep it a secret.”   Mary Kay Ash
